Born in 1974, Joana Choumali is a visual artist/photographer based in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. She studied graphic arts in Casablanca, Morocco, and worked as an art director in an advertising agency before starting her own photography Much of her work focuses on Africa, and what she learns about the innumerable cultures around her.
In her latest works, Joana Choumali embroiders directly on the images completing the act of creating the photograph image with a slow and meditative gesture. Her most recent artworks are unique objects enriched by her choice of textiles and sense of color.
Joana’s work is included in many public museums and private collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum Collection, the Prix Pictet Collection, the Societé Generale Abidjan Collection, the Harry David Art Collection, the Schulting Art Collection and the Matthias + Gervanne Leridon Art Collection.
In 2017, she exhibited her series Translation and Adorn at the Pavilion of the Ivory Coast during the 57th Venice International Biennale.
