Clara Claus (b. 1985) is a French artist. She graduated in 2012 from New York’s Cooper Union with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and now works between Paris and Banyuls-sur-mer, her hometown in the south of France.

Across painting, performance and video, Clara Claus accounts for her sensitive observations, diffracted through the prisms of distorted memory, blurred dreams and buried archaic remembrance. She finds her substance in the troubled zones of perception which, altered by time, no longer have a precise outline, but whose sensations endure. Her work evokes diluted, evanescent worlds, inviting us to commune around distant images, like the retinal stain of a fantasized cosmology.

Her paintings fix fragments of effervescent color and form on canvas. Her performances convene introspection, as does her invitation to summon our secrets around the fire of "Exaucer la Fumée". Her videos question the trace of memory, as when she renders the pictorial distortion of memory in "Les Vagues". Her work has been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions in France and the United States, as well as screenings and performances.

In 2021, Clara Claus directed "Nightvision" an award winning medium-length film, about an uncanny experience when assisting the photographer Thomas Hoepker in his home in Southampton. Viewing link available upon request.
