Sur Les monts noirs, à chaque pas, l’effort nous tend et pourtant nous flottons. Face à l’aridité, ce n’est pas la désolation que nous trouvons mais bien une beauté douloureuse et tendre à la fois où des richesses en demie-teintes se révèlent. Les noirs et les gris au fusain se diluent et se poudrent. Le ciel est à portée. Les nuages sont légers et tendres quand ils viennent tutoyer les sommets noirs qu’ils dérobent. L'encre des monts noirs N'en finit pas de couler, Les flancs sont secs et nus. L'austérité pourtant s'adoucit, Quand les nuages légers Lui chatouillent les pieds. Née Vietnamienne à Paris en 1975, Mai Khanh et sa famille deviennent réfugiés politiques à l'arrivée au pouvoir des communistes au Vietnam. Elle est à peine âgée de six mois quand ils quittent la Métropole pour la Nouvelle-Calédonie sur un bateau.
