Victor Vasarely est un plasticien tout à fait singulier dans l’histoire de l’art du XXème siècle par la création d’une nouvelle tendance : l’art optique. Développant son propre modèle d’art abstrait géométrique, l’artiste emploie un nombre minimal de formes et de couleurs. Il appelle «algorithme» ses oeuvres fondées sur des permutations programmables de nuances colorées. Il joue sur les effets d’ombre donnés par ces nuances pour forcer la rétine à créer sa propre image. La notion de répétition est cousine de la notion mathématique de symétrie.
