The artwork

Dion' s evocative cabinets are often manifestations of a battle of ideas between the rational collection of nature (Voltaire) and the irrational collection of the unconscious or extra-natural (Poe). This work embodies numerous concerns and themes in Dion' s work- monsters, travel, the distinction of the artificial and natural, passion of collecting, possible alternative taxonomies. For example the juxtaposition of the sculpted dinosaur (a real animal that no human ever actually encountered) with the mythic basilisk (an entirely fictive beast with magical powers), contrasts the transition form the world of nightmares to that of science.
